As a mentor group, we had the task of identifying a community partner to collaborate with in carrying out social projects. After a thorough evaluation of various organizations, we were told we will work with Pwani Youth Network. The organization is dedicated to the well-being of children and focuses on promoting sexual reproductive health and rights, talent development, and fostering peace and cohesion.
After selecting Pwani Youth Network, we split into two mentor groups focusing on health and sports, which are also some of the things Pwani Youth Network does. I didn’t get to choose the group I wanted to be in, but I was happy that I got to join the sports group because I believed the group members would assist with sports-related activities. In the sports group, I was told we further divided into a group for the podcast and a group for art and sports projects, and I was told we were asked to choose our preferred group based on our interests (I was absent for this). The health group will concentrate on issues related to sexual reproductive health, while the group I was put in will focus on a range of activities, such as using recycled materials for art projects.
Though I am excited to be part of the sports group, I believe that we will be engaged in a variety of activities that will provide us sports and art enthusiasts. During the class, the staff at Pwani Youth Network showed us how to create art using recycled materials, and I found this like an amazing concept. It was interesting to see how ordinary waste materials that you would find on the beach could be transformed into beautiful art pieces. I loved how the members of the Pwani Youth Network interacted with us and made us think.
