In May 2024 we had our service learning Proposal were we were judged based on our presentation and rejected or accepted. Lucky we were accepted, my group consisting of Aelsika, Tisha, Sarah, Teerna, Jemie, Murtaza, and me myself. Our projects goal was to Train students in essential leadership skills, with 80% demonstrating increased confidence and successfully leading a team project. So, by the end of the project, the students should be able to demonstrate leadership skills such as active listening, communication, organization and problem-solving skills. We presented our idea to 3 teachers and they all commended our idea. and thus we went on to the next step.
Detailed session plans and reflections are in the link provided but overall we had 6 sessions and this is a breakdown of the sessions.
Individual reflection
Being the presenter for our "Young Leaders Training Program" proposal was a challenging but rewarding experience. It gave me the opportunity to lead the communication of our group's ideas and showcase the effort we had put into understanding the needs at St. Augustine’s Preparatory School.
One strength I recognized during my presentation was my ability to clearly explain our project’s purpose, the activities we planned, and how they connected to solving the problem of bullying. I made sure to speak confidently, maintain eye contact, and pace myself so that the audience could follow the ideas easily. I also tried to use simple but impactful language when talking about sensitive issues like bullying, to make sure the message was taken seriously but remained hopeful.
However, I also noticed a few areas where I could improve. Sometimes, when explaining the more detailed parts, like the success criteria or the guiding questions, I could feel myself rushing a little. In the future, I need to pause more often and allow the audience to process the information, especially during complex sections. I also think I could have asked a few questions to involve the audience and make the presentation more interactive.
Presenting taught me valuable skills in communication, time management, and public speaking. It also made me realize that when you are passionate and well-prepared, it becomes easier to speak with confidence. Overall, I am proud of my role in representing the group, and I believe that through this experience.
